Depictions of the Northampton Eleanor Cross

A watercolour painting showing the Northampton Eleanor Cross in the centre of a grass covered mound with trees around and vista in distance

We begin our audio tour, led by Art Curator Elizabeth Socci, with an overview of the Eleanor Cross art in the museum’s collection.

The tour continues with a detailed look at specific artworks, a discussion on dating the works and comparisons of different ways artists have depicted the cross. The tour concludes by considering why the artists may have chosen to portray the Eleanor Cross.

Our art collection is home to 17 depictions of Eleanor Crosses with 16 of those showing the Northampton Eleanor Cross. These artworks have been created using a variety of mediums including pastel, watercolour, pen and engraving allowing for a variety of depictions of the Cross from the previous centuries.
